Rikki & Stephan: A Last-Minute Destination Wedding on Mount Etna, Sicily
Can you pull off a last-minute destination wedding in Sicily? Absolutely. Here is how Rikki and Stephan created an unforgettable celebration on the slopes of Mount Etna with authentic, documentary-style wedding photography.
From an Etna Winter Wedding to an August Celebration
My story with Rikki and Stephan started two years ago, in December 2024. I was booked for an intimate winter wedding at Cavanera Firriato, located on the northern slope of Mount Etna.
The couple from that event worked internationally, and their photos caught the eye of their global friend group—including Rikki and Stephan, an American couple living across the US, Europe, and Sicily.
Impressed by the experience of their friends Miriam and Dario, Rikki and Stephan got in touch with me and my co-photographer, Gaetano. They were looking for a candid wedding photographer in Sicily who could make camera-shy couples feel completely at ease while delivering high-end, artistic photography.
When we first connected via video call, we clicked immediately. Stephan is originally from Trecastagni, a picturesque town on the southern slope of Etna. Given their shared love for fine wine, planning an Etna vineyard wedding was the natural choice.
There was just one surprise: when they booked, I assumed the wedding was for summer 2026. Instead, this was a true last-minute wedding, scheduled for August 2025!
Groom Prep: Lava Stone Architecture & Sicilian Countryside
Stephan prepared in a traditional Sicilian country home built from black lava stone and fitted with classic terracotta tile floors. Surrounded by vineyards with views stretching down to the sea and the volcano rising behind, the backdrop was iconic.
Joined by an international group of friends from across the United States, his preparation was relaxed and informal. As a documentary wedding photographer, I worked unobtrusively, capturing raw interactions rather than forced poses.
Bride Prep: Intimate Moments in Trecastagni
Rikki got ready at a boutique historic B&B in Trecastagni alongside her mother, sister, and close friends. Her look was timeless and minimalist—a sleek, elegant gown paired with an effortless hair design.
She had organized all her details for detail shots, including an heirloom second dress honoring her European roots. Moving freely around the space, I documented the candid moments—from toasts to emotional touch-ups.
Despite August weather on Mount Etna being famously unpredictable, the rain held off long enough for us to shoot beautiful portraits and family photos on the terrace.

The Ceremony & Party at Cantine Nicosia
The main event took place at Cantine Nicosia, one of the most prominent winery venues on Mount Etna.

The Garden Ceremony: Officiated by the bride’s sister, the ceremony featured emotional speeches, a sand ceremony ritual, and the exchange of rings.

Couple Portraits: As the skies cleared, we ventured outside the venue to revisit meaningful spots along Etna that held personal significance for Rikki and Stephan. The warm golden hour light created ideal conditions for atmospheric portraiture.

The Reception: Guests enjoyed an outdoor aperitivo featuring local Sicilian culinary specialties, followed by dinner indoors and an energetic late-night dance party back in the garden.
Documentary Wedding Photography on Mount Etna
Rikki and Stephan’s day stood out because of their total trust in our creative vision. Rather than worrying about shot lists or posing, they chose to fully experience their wedding day, allowing us to capture genuine emotions as they naturally unfolded.
Equipment Note: We even tested a Leica M camera setup during this wedding for rangefinder photography lovers. Mission accomplished.
